India beat Australia by 320 runs at Mohali

India could probably have not asked for a better test win against Australia. Not only did they record their biggest test win ( in terms of runs), but with Sachin Tendulkar becoming test cricket’s highest run getter, Saurav Ganguly scoring a century and Amit Mishra grabbing five on debut, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men had it all going their way.

Once Zaheer Khan had removed Brad Haddin, Shane Watson and Brett Lee in a space of four deliveries, any slim hopes that Australia would have harboured of saving the test were destroyed. Although Michael Clarke hung in with a defiant 69, even he could not stop the inevitable as India romped home by 320 runs.It was India’s biggest ever win over Australia, eclipsing the 222 run defeat they inflicted upon Bob Simpson’s men three decades back, in Melbourne in 1978.

It was also India’s biggest test win in terms of runs, beating the 280 run defeat of South Africa at Kanpur in 1996, a match better remembered for one of Mohammed Azharuddin’s finest ever centuries.

For an Indian fan , this was as good a test match as one could remember.

For Australia, there were a couple of positives. Peter Siddle had an encouraging debut, although he will, in all eventuality, make way for Stuart Clark in the next match.  Shane Watson played well in the first innings, and Michael Clarke got some much needed confidence with his knock of 69.

Until the next test then, but Australia will have to come up with something really special if they are to stop this rampaging Indian side.
