New Zealand 2-1 Pakistan- 3rd/4th place playoff- Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

Great result for New Zealand. They had last beaten Pakistan at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and were thrashed 6-3 by the Asian team in the group game here. It was quite obvious that Pakistan were the favourites going into this game. But with them losing their last two games against Belgium and India, and New Zealand beating Belgium, the Black Sticks did have form on their side. And thanks to goals from prolific forward Simon Child and Lloyd Stephenson, New Zealand finished on the podium at the 17th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

It was Pakistan who opened the scoring, and it was their highest goal scorer in the tournament, Rehan Butt, who once again found the back of the net. Butt deflected the ball into goal after some excellent work by Pakistan on the right hand side.

Simon Child replied for the Kiwis, sending a shot into the top left corner from the top of the circle. It was an extremely well struck goal from a forward who seems to be growing by leaps and bounds every day.

Lloyd Stephenson’s reverse stick attempt in the 47th minute ultimately proved to be the difference between the two teams.

It was a disappointing end to the tournament for Pakistan, who started off brightly with ten points from four games before losing to Belgium and India.
