Canada finish fifth at Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2008, beat Belgium 4-3

In a battle between two Olympic bound teams, Canada beat Belgium thanks to a golden goal from Philip Wright and finished fifth in the 17th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup  in Ipoh. For the Canadians, the result was a marked improvement from last year, when they lost to Malaysia, South Korea and Pakistan to finish at the bottom of Group B.  Even worse, they failed to find the back of the net last time. Canada’s last group game- a draw against Argentina, would have given them confidence coming into the fifth/sixth place playoff game.

The game got off to an electrifying start as Jerome Dekeyser gave Belgium the lead in the third minute, only to see Connor Grimes cancel it out two minutes later. Dekeyser again put his team in front in the eighth minute, but Ravi Kahlon equalised for Canada in the 12th minute.

About one third of the first half gone, and four goals in . One could not have been blamed for wanting more. But fortunately for the keepers and the defenders of both teams, no further goal was scored till the interval. 10 minutes after the break, Bindi Kullar gave the North Americans a 3-2 lead, but Belgium fought back through Max Luycx’s goal just before the hour mark.

And the tie remained at 3-3 till Philip Wright wove his magic for Canada in the eighty third minute, scoring the winning goal.

Belgium 3-4 Canada ( Jerome Dekeyser *2, Max Luycx/ Connor Grimes, Ravi Kahlon, Bindi Kullar, Philip Wright)
