India 2-1 Malaysia, set up final clash against Argentina- Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2008

A team that started this tournament in the worst way possible- with two losses in the first two games, has staged one of the finest comebacks in the history of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup to set up a final clash against Argentina. Yes folks, India after losing to New Zealand and Argentina, recorded four wins on the trot ( Canada, Belgium, Pakistan and Malaysia) to finish with twelve points from their six games. By virtue of this win, they finish two points ahead of Pakistan, and have thus earned the right to play Argentina in the final.

India’s first goal was scored by Shivendra Singh, who deflected Sandeep Singh’s shot into the Malaysian goal. The Asian side’s second came through drag flick specialist Sandeep Singh, who has an excellent chance of finishing as the tournament’s top goal scorer if Rehan Butt does not add to his tally.

India lead 2-0 till the last minute, when Mohd Amin Rahim scored a consolation goal from a penalty corner for Malaysia. The Malaysians tried hard to force their way back into the game after going down 0-2, but Indian keeper Adrian D’ Souza was in fine form, and thwarted all their attempts.

With this result, India qualify for their fourth Azlan Shah Cup final, and their first in twelve years. The last time they were in the final was in 1995, when they beat Germany for the title.

Malaysia finish last in the Azlan Shah table, with only four points to their name- a win against New Zealand and a draw against Canada.

India will look for revenge for the 1-5 drubbing they got at the hands of the Argentines in the group game.
