Pakistan 6-3 New Zealand- Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2008

After their opening day 3-2 win over hosts Malaysia , Pakistan asserted their status as favourites to win the 17th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup when they thrashed New Zealand 6-3 in Ipoh.

The Kiwis, who had beaten India 4-3 yesterday, took the lead through skipper Philip Burrows. Rehan Butt scored the first of his four goals in the 11th minute, when Mohammad Saqlain’s cross found him. Three minutes later, Butt turned provider as he set up Shakeel Abbasi for the second goal. Saqlain himself scored the third in the 28th minute, and Butt pounded another one in as the score became 4-1 with half an hour of play over.

Hayden Shaw’s penalty corner made it 4-2, and after the break, the Black Sticks pulled one more back- again through Shaw. With a little over twenty minutes to go, it was game on. But  Butt scored his third on the hour mark, and added another close to the final whistle as Pakistan won the game 6-3.
