New Zealand vs India – Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

Olympic participants New Zealand, without Ryan Archibald, began their Sultan Azlan Shah Cup campaign on a winning note when they beat India 4-3.

The Indians, who have finished third in the last two editions of the tournament, started off brightly, taking a two goal advantage in the first twenty minutes.

Dragflick specialist Sandeep Singh scored from both penalty corners, as India went 2-0 up. Andrew Hayward’s conversion from a penalty corner made it 2-1, and Simon Child equalised for the Kiwis.

With the score at 2-2 going into the lemon break, the match was evenly poised as the second half started.

In the forty fifth minute, Phillip Burrows scored the third, and Gareth Brooks made it 4-2 in the fifty third minute.

Although Sandeep Singh scored a hat trick by converting another penalty corner, the Kiwis held on to win 4-3.

India take on Argentina next, while the Kiwis will play Pakistan.
