Gautam Gambhir not in the squad for playing South Africa

You have a talented left handed batsman, who specialises in the one position that you have struggled to fill over the years. He can bat at No.3 as well. He helps you win the T20 World Cup,  a tournament where you had been written off even before the first ball was bowled. He is the highest run getter in an ODI tri series which also includes the  current World Champions and two time World Cup runners up. He plays a pivotal part in you winning the series, and then the time comes to select a squad for the next home test series. What you do ? Drop him. Inexplicable as it  seems, that is precisely what India have done with Gautam Gambhir.

There are only two excuses that the selectors can come up-

1.) There were only fourteen people to pick, and Jaffer and Sehwag were already in it.

2.) While Gambhir has performed well in the limited overs version of the game in recent times, he is yet to prove his mettle in the longer version of the game. Probably the selectors do not want him to struggle against Ntini, Morkel and co. and then be forced to eject him out on the grounds of poor form ?

As for Gambhir, there is not much that he can do apart from hoping for a second chance.

India’s 14 member squad

Jaffer, Sehwag, Dravid, Ganguly, Tendulkar, Yuvraj, Dhoni, Laxman, Sreesanth, Kumble (C), Harbhajan, Chawla, Sreesanth, Irfan Pathan.
