Bolton out, Rangers lose but go through

After seeing Tottenham and Everton being penalised on penalties, Bolton and Rangers were the only British clubs with any hope of making it to the last eight.

A late goal from Bruno Pereirinha saw the Trotters lose 1-0 away at Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese side won the tie 2-1 on aggregate, after having drawn the first leg at the Reebok stadium.

Rangers travelled to Bremen leading 2-0 from the first leg at Ibrox. Brazilian midfielder Diego, reportedly wanted by Chelsea, scored the only goal of the game in the fifty seventh minute as Rangers held on despite long periods of pressure from the Germans. Keeper Allan McGregor was forced into action time and again by Rosenberg, Jensen, Sanogo and co.

So, we have four English sides in the last eight of the Champions League.

The corresponding figure for the UEFA Cup- Zilch.

Does it say anything about the quality of football behind the big four ? Spurs and Everton could say they were unlucky. Bolton are in a Premiership relegation battle, and survival in the Premiership would obviously have been more important for Gary Megson than winning in Europe.
