Spurs and Toffees shot out of the UEFA Cup

The penalty shootout is probably one of the cruelest ways to determine the winner of a football match, for it never guarantees that the best team wins in the end. And much to their agony, Carling Cup champions Tottenham Hotspur and David Moyes’ Everton were knocked out of the UEFA cup by PSV Eindhoven and Fiorentina respectively. The two losses leave Bolton and Rangers as the only British sides with a chance of progressing to the last eight.

Tottenham travelled to the Philips stadium trailing 0-1 after a thirty fourth minute Jefferson Farfan strike had given PSV a win at White Hart Lane.

And Spurs had to wait until the 81st minute for Dimitar Berbatov to bring the tie back on level terms. Steed Malbranque was denied by a stunning goal from PSV goalkeeper Gomes in extra time as the match went to penalties.
