Champions Trophy hockey- Day 7 preview

The ongoing Champions Trophy in Kuala Lumpur has seen each of the participating teams play six matches each. Germany are through to Sunday’s final clash, but their opponents are yet to be decided. Korea have 11 points from six games, while Australia are on third with 10, followed by the Netherlands with nine.

The Aussies played some fine hockey to draw with the Netherlands 3-3 in their matchday six clash. The Southern Hemisphere side came back from a goal down on three separate occasions in the game. For Australia, Russell Ford, Luke Doerner and Ed Ockenden scored while Taeke Taekema, Matthijs Brouwer and  Jeroen Hertzberger were on the scoresheet for the Oranje.

Korea’s 3-3 draw with Pakistan means that both Holland and Australia have a chance to make it to the final in their last game.

Holland play Pakistan who are second from bottom. The Aussies play Germany, and are clear underdogs for that clash based on current form. Will the Germans field a full strength squad to make things easy for Korea and Holland ?

Korea take on Great Britain. If Korea and Australia lose and the Dutch win, it will be Holland vs Germany on Sunday. If the Koreans draw and Australia lose, the Dutch need to win by a margin of 3 goals or higher. If the Koreans win, well…it really doesn’t matter what Australia and Holland do in their respective games.
